The United States said Wednesday it will seek a ban on the international trade of bluefin tuna to protect the species at a meeting this month in Qatar, in a move opposed by Japan.

Tom Strickland, the assistant secretary of the interior for fish and wildlife, said the United States offered "support for a proposal to ban all international commercial trade of Atlantic bluefin tuna" at the Qatar meeting.

"The US government is committed to working with our many international partners to continue to rebuild Atlantic bluefin tuna and ensure sustained conservation and management of the species into the future," he said in a statement.

Some 175 nations that are part of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) are meeting from March 13 to 25 in the Qatari capital Doha.
