LONDON (Reuters) - The government's one-off tax on bank bonuses could bring in more than 2.5 billion pounds to the government's coffers this financial year, according to a survey of banks conducted by the Financial Times.
That is well above the 550 million pounds estimated by ChancellorAlistair Darling when he announced the 50 percent levy on bank bonuses over 25,000 pounds in December.
The Treasury would not confirm the estimate, but, if accurate, the extra cash could be used for extra measures to support the recovery in the upcoming Budget, or to help pay down Britain's record budget deficit.
